CROSS REFERENCE ON RELATED REQUEST
[0001] The present application claims the benefit of United States Interim Application No. 61/836,378, filed June 18, 2013. The entire disclosure of the above application is incorporated herein by reference. Field of Invention
[0002] The present exhibit refers to garbage vehicles and more particularly to a garbage vehicle with a tailgate including a CNG system. Background of the Invention
[0003] Various types of garbage vehicles with CNG systems have been proposed in the past. One type is a CNG system mounted on the chassis frame. This system requires a large amount of space, which is usually not available in many types of garbage vehicles. The size of the system limits the vehicle's ability to trash. Also, a large percentage of weight is added to the front axle of the chassis.
[0004] Another type of CNG system is a ceiling mounted system. Here, the CNG system is mounted at the highest point on the unit. As a result, this exposes the CNG unit to damage when passing low overpasses, shop doors, tree branches, etc. Additionally, a roof mounted CNG system adds a large percentage of weight to the front axle.
[0005] Tailgate mounted pre-assembled PODs have been urged on garbage vehicles. These units are relatively large, providing a protruding portion with the center of gravity measured from the tailgate hinge. This creates great momentum in the tailgate raised cylinder and tailgate frame. Additionally, CNG fuel line routing is exposed due to routing through the upper cross member of the tailgate. The aesthetics of the pre-assembled system are no longer desirable. Additionally, the tanks in the POD tailgate are stacked, making inspection and repair of the tanks difficult. Additionally, the assembly of PODs is quite difficult, adding weight to the garbage vehicle, reducing its capacity.
[0006] It would be desirable to provide a garbage vehicle that overcomes the deficiencies of the existing technique. The present garbage vehicle provides a CNG system at the tailgate. The CNG system provides greater fuel capacity than previous concepts. The system does not extend above the vehicle and thus is no larger than the highest point on the bodywork. This eliminates damage caused from excessive height. The center of gravity measured from the center of the tailgate hinges is reduced due to the integrated design with a first CNG tank, hidden between the tailgate hinges and the other tanks following the contour of the curved tailgate. The present concept provides an aesthetic appearance with a contoured tailgate having a uniform appearance. The present invention allows inspection and repair with a single integrated layer of tanks, following the contour of the tailgate. Additionally, weight is kept to a minimum by integrating and utilizing the existing tailgate structure to create mounting space for the tanks. Invention Summary
[0007] According to a first aspect of the invention, a tailgate for a vehicle for garbage comprises a frame with a first leg and a second leg. The second leg forms an angle to the first leg. A plurality of CNG tanks are coupled with the frame. A cover overlays the frame and provides an aesthetic appearance to the tailgate. The first leg has an overall arcuate portion. At least one of the plurality of CNG tanks is positioned between a pair of hinges connecting the tailgate to the garbage vehicle. At least one of the plurality of CNG tanks is positioned on the second leg of the frame.
[0008] According to a second aspect of the invention, a vehicle for garbage comprises a vehicle chassis with a container secured with the vehicle chassis. A tailgate is attached to the container. The tailgate further comprises a frame with a first leg and a second leg. The second leg is at an angle to the first leg. A plurality of CNG tanks are coupled with the frame. [0024] Example embodiments will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0025] Returning to the figures, a garbage vehicle is illustrated and designated with the reference number 10. The garbage vehicle includes a chassis 12 with a cabin 14, a garbage bin 16 and a tailgate 20. The chassis 12 includes a frame 22 that receives the garbage container 16 as well as wheels 24, which provide mobility for the vehicle.
[0026] The tailgate 20 is secured to the bin 16 by hinges 26. The hinges 26 are connected around pivot pins 28 so that the tailgate 20 can rotate with respect to the garbage bin 16. In order to rotate, a pair of lifting cylinders 30 are on each side of the tailgate 20. The lifting cylinders 30 are coupled with the tailgate, so that for opening the container 16, the cylinders 30 are actuated, which, in turn, hinge the tailgate 20 around the pivot pins 28 via the hinges 26, as seen in figure 2.
[0027] The rear door 20 includes a cover 40, a frame 42 and a plurality of CNG tanks 44. The cover 40 includes a front portion 46, a top portion 48, side portions 50, 52, a rear portion 54 and a bottom portion 56. Cover portions 46-56 surround frame 42 and tanks 44 to prevent access to tanks 44.
[0028] The frame 42 includes a pair of side beams 58, 60 which are substantially identical. Thus, the explanation of one will apply to both side beams 58, 60. A plurality of cross beams 62 connect the side beams 58, 60 together. The side beams 58, 60 have a first portion 64 and a second portion 66. The first portion 64 forms an angle to the second portion 66. The second portion 66 is of an overall arcuate design and curves longitudinally between the top and the bottom. of the tailgate 20. The first portion 64 is flat and lies on top of the tailgate 20. The hinges 26 are secured with the gusset 70. A plurality of saddle blocks 68 receive the ends 69 of the tanks 44. saddle 68 holds the tanks 44 in the frame 42. The saddle blocks 68 are attached to the side beams 58, 60. Additionally, by combining the tanks 44 with the side beams 58, 60 and tailgate frame 42, this creates a Desirable shape with a strong, lightweight design.
The side portions 50, 52 of the cover include an outer bracing element 70. The side portions 50, 52 include a body 72 secured to the bracing element 70. The body 72 has an overall arcuate edge 74, which follows the rafters The sides 58, 60, which correspond to the front and bottom cover portions 46, 56. The body portion 72 includes a flat top edge 76 that engages with the top cover portion 48. The side covers 50, 52 include a plurality of openings 78 that allow access to tanks 44 for filling and inspection purposes. A plurality of cross members 80 are secured between the side members 50, 52. Cross members 80 allow cover portions 46, 48 and 56 to be secured, such as by bolting to cross members 80.
The capping top portion 48 has an overall L-shape, following the contour of the straight edge 76 of the capping side portions 50, 52, as well as an additional edge, which is perpendicular to the top edge 76. The portion cover 46 has an overall rectangular design and can be bolted or riveted or the like to the cross members 80. The cover bottom portion 56 has an overall L-shape to follow the contour of the arcuate portion of the side walls as well as the straight edge or the flat bottom portion of the side portions 50, 52.
[0031] Thereby, the tailgate 20 includes a chamber 90 defined by the cover portions 46-56 for housing the tanks 44. The chamber 90 has an arcuate portion 92 as well as a straight top portion 94. The chamber portion top 94 allows an additional tank to be positioned on top of the tailgate 20. This provides an additional volume of natural gas.
Thus, the cover portions 46-56 provide an aesthetic appearance to the tailgate 20. Also, the tailgate 20 does not extend above the height of the garbage vehicle. Additionally, tanks 44 are provided at the rear of the vehicle, reducing weight on the front axle. Also, the tailgate 20 can be raised and lowered without any obstruction to the container.
[0033] Returning to Figures 5-9, an additional reinforcing structure of the side beams 58, 60 of the frame and cross beams 62 will be discussed.
[0034] The first portion 64 of the side beams 58, 60 includes a top flange 102 and a side wall 106. A first joint plate 104 is welded to the top flange 102 and the side wall 106, as shown in Figures 5, 6 and 9. The first joining plate 104 is aligned to the side beams 58, 60 so that they are positioned under the saddle blocks 68. Additionally, a second joining plate 108 is welded with the top flange 102 and the cross beam 62. This is illustrated in figures 5, 8 and 9.
[0035] The first joining plate 104 has various shapes and is illustrated as a polygonal configuration. The splice plate 108 includes a first edge 110 and a second edge 112. The first and second edges 110, 112 are welded, or the like, to the top flange 102 and the side wall 106. Thus, the splice plate 104 provides additional strength to control deformation and stress in the structure. The splice plate 104 includes a drop-shaped opening 114. The drop-shaped aperture 114 includes a circular portion 116 and a channel portion 118. As shown, the splice plate 104 includes a tapered edge 120 that tapers. between sides 122 and 124. Channel portion 118 of opening 114 extends from circular portion 116 outwardly to tapered edge 120. This divides tapered edge 120 and provides clearance, creating two portions 126, 128 of the splice plate. . As illustrated in Figure 7, as a load is applied to the frame structure, the joining plate 104 deforms to control the tension in the frame. Reinforcement 104 deforms so that the first and second portions 126, 128 of the joint plate close the gap created by the channel portion 118 of the opening 114. low in area, even if a 20G load is applied to the structure.
[0036] The second joining plate 108 has an overall polygonal configuration. Second joint plate 108 includes first and second edges 140, 142, which are secured to flange 102 and sidewall 106, respectively, as described above. The first and second edges 140, 142 are welded to the top flange 102 and the side wall 106. Additionally, the bottom edge 144 of the second joint plate 104 is welded to the cross beam 62. The second joint plate 104 includes an aperture drop-shaped 150 with a circular portion 152 and a channel portion 154. The channel portion 154 extends between the junction of the side edges 140, 142. This creates a gap between the first portion 156 and the second portion 158 of the second splice plate 108. Thus, unlike splice plate 104, channel portion 154 opens toward the joint or corner of flange 102 and sidewall 106. When a force is applied to second splice plate 108, the clearance of the channel portion 154 of the opening 158 widens while the first portion 156 and the second portion 158 of the second joint plate 108 move apart with respect to each other. In this way, the second joining plate 108 controls deformation and tension in the structure.
[0037] Returning to figures 10 and 11, the high pressure CNG hose connection between the vehicle 10 and the tailgate 20 is illustrated. Here, a flexible high pressure CNG hose 200 is connected between the rear door 20 and the waste container 16. The rear portion 202 of the frame structure includes an opening 204. The opening 204 extends toward the cover portion 48 , as well as towards the bottom of the tailgate. Thus, opening 204 is L-shaped with a horizontal leg 208 at the top edge and a vertical leg 210 at the side edge of the rear portion 202. One end 212 of the high pressure CNG hose 200 connects with a fitting 214 which extends through opening 206. The other end 216 of the high pressure CNG hose 200 connects with a tube 218 which extends from the waste container 16. When the tailgate 20 moves between an open and a closed position , the high pressure CNG hose connection is not affected due to the movement of the high pressure CNG hose 200. As the rear port 20 moves, the flexible high pressure CNG hose 200 moves in two planes ( horizontal and vertical). In the closed position of the tailgate (figures 10a and 10b), the high pressure CNG hose 200 is positioned with one end 230 adjacent to the tailgate, vertically above the waste bin 16. The U-shaped portion 232 is positioned on the tailgate. top of the trash bin 16. When the tailgate is in a fully open position (figures 11a, 11b), the end of the high pressure CNG hose 230 adjacent to the tailgate rotates to move horizontally above the litter bin 16 The U-shaped portion 232 moves vertically upwards away from the waste bin 16. This prevents the high pressure CNG hose 200 from exceeding a minimum bend radius or a twisting effect that would loosen the CNG fittings . In this way, the High Pressure CNG Flexible Hose 200 provides movement for opening and closing the tailgate 20. The High Pressure CNG Flexible Hose 200 allows for continuous connection between the vehicle's CNG fuel system and the port. rear. In this way, the flexibility of the 200 High Pressure CNG hose allows opening and closing of the tailgate, without disconnecting or terminating the tailgate CNG fuel system to the vehicle. Also a shield 234 covers the high pressure CNG hose.
